Overview

Dendera is the temple that surprises even people who have already been to Luxor. It lies about an hour north of Luxor and is considered the best-preserved temple in Egypt: its ceilings still carry their original colours after more than two thousand years, and recent soot cleaning has brought back the night blue, the stars and the zodiac with astonishing clarity.

The temple is dedicated to the goddess Hathor and contains ascending and descending staircases carved with the royal procession, the famous astronomical ceiling, underground crypts, and the relief of Cleopatra with her son Caesarion on the rear wall.

The trip combines Dendera with one or two stops in Luxor depending on time, plus lunch on the bank of the Nile. Dendera sees far fewer visitors than the Luxor sites, and that alone makes the day calmer and more enjoyable.
